Recipients of The Brodsky Grant

AFA is proud to provide its annual Brodsky Grant to a deserving AFA nonprofit member organization.

2009 Brodsky Grant
Organization: Selfhelp Community Services, Inc., New York, NY
Program: Incorporate into its social model adult day programcognitively and physically stimulating activities designed to help people newly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or related illnesses retain mental and physical perception. The activities utilize technology-based and non-technological resources, such as music therapy, computer learning, Nintendo Wii, and two cognitive exercise systems—Neurobics and the Dakim BrainFitness System.


2008 Brodsky Grant
Organization: People Animals Love (PAL), Washington, D.C.
Program: Enable the organization to train more volunteers and increase its pet therapy visitation program to older adults by 30 percent in the Washington, D.C. area. PAL’s volunteer teams of certified dogs and their handlers visit retirement homes, nursing facilities, hospitals and other sites in order to provide pet therapy to sick, lonely and forgotten adults and children.


2007 Brodsky Grant
Organization: Rampart Group, Inc. dba Senior Care of Brevard, Cocoa, FL
Program: Provide crisis intervention services to families and individual and group counseling to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as link these clients to appropriate information and resources, such as medical updates, financial and legal counsel, and home safety compliance, as the disease progresses.


2006 Brodsky Grant
Organization: The Kennedy Center, Inc., Trumbull, CT
Program: Develop a short documentary that will provide education about the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease for people with Down syndrome, as well as highlight efforts involving research, advocacy and a holistic model of care that will maintain respect and dignity for these individuals.


2005 Brodsky Grant
Organization: The Eden Alternative, Sherburne, NY
Program: Develop “Eden at Home’s Core Concepts Training,” a program that will provide specific tools to improve quality of life in the home and community-care environment for individuals with dementia and their care partners, such as family, friends and volunteers. Eden at Home will extend Eden’s core philosophy that everyone has a gift to share regardless of physical or cognitive challenges.
