Carol Steinberg is president of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to optimal care for individuals with dementia and their families, advocacy and research.
Prior to being appointed to this position in May 2013, she served as executive vice president of AFA since its founding. She has been instrumental in building AFA into a leading national organization, and has played an integral role in AFA’s strategic plan; development and implementation of its range of programs, services and national initiatives, such as the organization’s hallmark annual National Memory Screening Day ; and overall communication strategies. Steinberg is regularly interviewed by national and local media, and has written numerous articles on topics related to Alzheimer’s disease and caregiving.
She also has served as editor-in-chief of care ADvantage, the nation’s first magazine specifically for caregivers of people with dementia, since it made its debut in 2004.
Steinberg joined AFA after an extensive career as an award-winning freelance journalist, including being a regular contributor to The New York Times. She received a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
Vice President-External Relations
Josie DiChiara is vice president-external relations at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. In this role, she oversees AFA’s relationships with member organizations and other stakeholders; orchestrates marketing activities; and leads the events and national programs team.
She has successfully built AFA’s branded events, including the “Together for Care” reception and “For the Love of George” cocktail party/concert series in various states; and grown various national initiatives, including National Memory Screening Day and the AFA Quilt to Remember.
DiChiara joined AFA as director of marketing in 2005 after extensive brand marketing, event planning and product development experience in the publishing, entertainment and hospitality industries. Previous positions included marketing posts at BMG Entertainment and Allegro Corporation.
Vice President-Public Policy
Eric Sokol is vice president of public policy at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, heading up the foundation’s office in Washington and overseeing its advocacy strategy. He has a strong track record of advocating for the needs of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other vulnerable populations, advancing AFA’s recommendations for inclusion in the “National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease,” and weighing in on legislative and regulatory issues related to clinical care, long-term care and caregiving.
He also serves as AFA’s representative on numerous coalitions, including Leaders Engaged on Alzheimer’s Disease (LEAD), which AFA co-facilitates.
An attorney and leading healthcare advocate with in-depth knowledge of regulatory and legislative issues, Sokol joined AFA in November 2011 after an extensive career in government relations. He served for more than six years as director of the Power Mobility Coalition, a nationwide coalition of manufacturers, providers and beneficiaries of power wheelchairs and motorized scooters; and for nine years as deputy director of government affairs at the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, a 6,000-member trade association whose membership includes home care and hospice providers, home medical equipment suppliers and caregivers.
