Alzheimer's Foundation of America Attains BBB Seal for Charity Accountability
NEW YORK, NY—The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), a New York-based national nonprofit organization that focuses on providing optimal care to families affected by Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, announced today that it has been awarded the coveted seal of the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.
AFA attained the status after the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, a national charity watchdog, completed a rigorous review of AFA and determined that it meets the alliance's Standards for Charity Accountability. The process included an evaluation of AFA's governance, effectiveness, finances, solicitations and information materials—beyond that required by government regulators for charities.
“This distinction recognizes AFA's steadfast commitment to ethical practice, giving donors even more assurance that we are keeping a tight rein on administrative costs and concentrating on what really counts—programs and services at the national level and in local communities across America,” said Bert Brodsky, AFA's chairman of the board and chairman and CEO of Sandata Inc., Port Washington, NY.
Based on BBB calculations, AFA spent 91 percent of total expenses on programs and services, and only nine percent on general, administrative and fundraising expenses for the fiscal year ended December 2006.
According to Art Taylor, the alliance's president and chief executive officer, “National charities that display the BBB Wise Giving Alliance seal can do so with pride. Not only are they attesting to their organizations' adherence to sound standards, they are helping to increase donor confidence and strengthen public trust in giving.”
Eric J. Hall, AFA's president and chief executive officer, said AFA is witnessing “spiraling demand” for services throughout the nation. The incidence of Alzheimer's disease is expected to triple to 16 million Americans by mid-century.
“The needs of families are enormous, and we will continue to proudly and compassionately lead the way in providing the best in care to them. Giving them the support and dignity they deserve is our main priority,” Hall said.
AFA unites 800 member organizations nationwide, most of which provide hands-on programs and services in their communities that meet the educational, emotional, practical and financial needs of families affected by the disease. It offers its nonprofit member organizations the opportunity to apply for grants to develop and enhance local services.
AFA's services include a toll-free hot line, with counseling by licensed social workers; bilingual educational materials; the nation's first magazine for dementia caregivers; training for healthcare professionals; and national standards of excellence for dementia care settings. It also spearheads several groundbreaking national initiatives, including National Memory Screening Day and the AFA Quilt to Remember.
