Bridgeway Pointe Memory Care Unit Awarded ‘Excellence in Care’ Status

NEW YORK, NY — The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) recently awarded its “Excellence in Care Dementia Program of Distinction” status to the memory care unit at Bridgeway Pointe in Cincinnati for achieving AFA’s national standard of excellence for facilities that provide care to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related illnesses.

The unit, called The Harbor, at the assisted living facility is the first dementia care setting in Ohio and the 15th in the nation to earn this national designation. AFA believes its comprehensive set of standards reflect the essential components of quality dementia care.

“Although we offer various levels of assisted living care, our entire staff receives ongoing dementia training and is responsible for achieving this recognition. This award helps confirm that we’re attaining the highest standards for our residents with dementia and their families,” said Daphne Glenn, executive director of Bridgeway Pointe. “Our goal is to offer our residents exceptional care and ‘great life moments.’”

At The Harbor, which serves individuals in all stages of dementia, staff members encourage cognitive stimulation, physical movement and social interaction—all personalized for each resident in the 15-apartment wing. Activities include gardening, gentle exercise, sing-alongs, live music, hand massages, parachute play and bus outings. The Harbor’s intimate environment includes two living rooms, a serenity garden with a walking path and a dining area with home-style meals. Bridgeway Pointe is located on the campus of Drake Center, a physical and medical rehabilitation facility.

Eric J. Hall, AFA’s president and CEO, commended Bridgeway Pointe for receiving the Excellence in Care distinction for its memory care unit.

“Bridgeway Pointe’s dementia care setting mirrors a model of optimal care. Its achievement in being awarded Excellence in Care status speaks to its best practices on multiple levels and to its commitment to individuals with dementia,” Hall said.

Introduced in 2006, Excellence in Care is a voluntary program in which AFA-trained Excellence in Care specialists conduct on-site evaluations and work side-by-side with dementia care settings nationwide to comply with its standards and for ongoing performance improvement. The evaluation includes assessing a setting’s physical environment, safety procedures, program activities and training for staff and families.
