Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Awards ‘Excellence in Care’ Status to First Facility in New England
Marks 25th Setting in Nation to Earn Designation

NEW YORK, NY — The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) recently awarded its “Excellence in Care Dementia Program of Distinction” status to Summerhill Assisted Living-The Meadows, Peterborough, NH, for achieving AFA’s national standards of excellence that reflect the essential components of quality care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related illnesses.

The memory care community is the 25th dementia care setting in the nation and the first in New England to earn this designation.

“We are absolutely thrilled to death. The staff has worked extremely hard to earn this distinction,” said Linda Brenner, R.N., interim executive director.

Summerhill Assisted Living specializes in providing care and support to residents with memory impairments. Each of its two dementia communities, called Meadows 1 and 2, houses about a dozen residents. The facility assesses each resident and develops an individualized care plan to maximize each person’s independence and dignity. It also offers specialized educational and group support services to families.

In congratulating Summerhill, Eric J. Hall, AFA’s president and CEO, said, “Summerhill’s memory care residence exemplifies the type of optimal care that individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families deserve. By meeting the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s national standards of excellence, the facility demonstrates the type of best practices and commitment that all facilities should aspire to achieve.”

The dementia care setting achieved the Excellence in Care distinction after an AFA Excellence in Care specialist conducted a comprehensive on-site evaluation and consultation to determine that the facility met the national standards and was committed to ongoing performance improvement. The evaluation includes assessing a setting’s physical environment, safety procedures, program activities and training for staff and families.
