Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Names Long Islander to Board of Trustees

NEW YORK, NY— The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), a leading national nonprofit organization based in New York, today announced that Gerald (Jerry) Angowitz, of Oyster Bay, NY, has joined its board of trustees.

Angowitz is currently the managing director of Lloyd Executive Search/Interim Executives, a Melville, NY-based staffing firm. Previously, he served as president of his own senior management consultancy, The Angowitz Group; and as senior vice president of human resources and administration at RJR Nabisco, Inc.

Angowitz was drawn to AFA because of his family’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease, and the tie-in with AFA’s mission to provide optimal care to individuals with dementia and their families. He and his siblings were caregivers for his mother who lived with the brain disorder for 10 years until her death at age 88 in 2009. Her father, brother and aunt also had dementia.

“Alzheimer’s disease has had a profound effect on my life,” Angowitz said. “My siblings and I have been witnesses to the slow fade to black of a life once so vital and vibrant. It remains a haunting memory to this day.”

“We were clueless and did not know where to turn for guidance, advice. We felt helpless,” he added. “Experience is, indeed, a great teacher. I hope to apply the lessons learned to help me guide this invaluable foundation as it strives to do more, provide more, and help more families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.”

Bert Brodsky, AFA’s chairman of the board, said Angowitz brings both personal insight and enormous business acumen to the board. “Having been an Alzheimer’s caregiver himself, Jerry truly understands the plight millions of families face every day with this disease,” he said. “The passion he brings to AFA will help propel the organization even further.”

In addition to his post on AFA’s board of trustees, Angowitz is a member of the board of directors of the Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Commack, NY.

He holds a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School, and a B.A. in Economics from Brooklyn College (CUNY).
