NEW YORK (July 22, 2013)—Dementia care professionals are in a class by themselves, taking on new challenges each day as they provide care to people with the progressive brain disorder. Now, families, colleagues and others have an opportunity to recognize these exceptional individuals by nominating them for “Dementia Care Professional of the Year”—an annual award presented by Dementia Care Professionals of America (DCPA), a division of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA).

The 7th annual award will honor an individual who has demonstrated professional excellence in care, compassionate performance that exceeds expectations and a dedicated commitment to people with Alzheimer’s disease or related illnesses.

Professionals do not need to be affiliated with DCPA or AFA to be nominated and can be recommended by their peers, colleagues, employers, clients or clients’ families. The deadline for applications is September 1, 2013. For more information or to apply, visit

“Too often, dementia care professionals are unsung heroes in a field where care is critical. Their knowledge, creativity and compassion can truly make a difference in the lives of people with this heartbreaking disease, and their families,” said Carol Steinberg, AFA’s president.

Last year’s winner was Gwenn Fried of Trenton, N.J., manager of horticultural therapy services at NYU Langone Medical Center’s Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Enid A. Haupt Glass Garden in New York City. Fried created a weekly horticultural therapy support group for people in the middle to late stages of Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.

DCPA offers membership, training, qualification and other benefits to dementia care professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers, home health aides and therapists. DCPA has trained more than 6,300 professionals since the division was founded in 2004. For more information, visit
